martha torrance is an organization development consultant who has consulted in the for-profit, public, and non-profit sectors for 20 years. her work focuses on strategic planning, leadership development and executive coaching, as well as team training and development. she has had her own consulting practice since june 2001. her recent public sector and non-profit clients include the cities of providence, ri and boston, ma, the peekskill, ny and williamstown, ma school boards and superintendents, the westerly, narragansett, south kingstown, north kingstown, and bristol-warren, ri school districts, the southern rhode island collaborative (9 school districts), the international charter school, the day care justice cooperative, all children's theater and progreso latino in rhode island, and the boston public schools human resources department, center for media and library technology, pilot schools, and school committee. she also recently co-delivered a day on leadership to 130 head start directors and their staff at the new england regional conference in nashua, nh.
martha was on the staff of the boston management consortium - a public private partnership dedicated to increasing the management capacity of city of boston managers - from 1988-1999, and continued to work with the consortium as a consultant until 2001. she consulted with the boston mayor's office and many city programs and departments before becoming the practice director for the consortium's work with the boston public schools in 1993. she led a variety of consulting projects for this 64,000 student, 130 school public institution, including a human resources "reinvention" project. much of her work with the boston public schools was focused on the administrative structure and its effectiveness in supporting teaching and learning in the schools.
in addition to her public sector and non-profit work, martha has delivered teambuilding, communication and leadership training to many private sector organizations, including jp morgan, banker's trust, citigroup, general electric, pfizer, columbia university and babson college executive programs, lafarge group, and an international strategy consulting firm. prior to becoming an od consultant, martha worked as a psychiatric social worker, a special education teacher, an outward bound instructor, and a community organizer.
martha has a ba from yale university and an msw and mba from boston college. she is a certified trainer of the myers-briggs type i and ii indicators and a trained mediator with mediation works, inc. she lives in massachusetts near providence, rhode island.
